Some years ago, I picked up a pattern book of 99 different granny squares. I had a thought that I’d learn them all, making several of each pattern to make sure it was fixed in my mind, and then sew them into a blanket.
Needless to say, this did not happen. I made and learned about four of the patterns, making four of each pattern. Then I stashed them away in my project bag and did nothing with them.
Until this summer. I was using up several balls of wool to make a granny square blanket and didn’t want to buy more when I ran out but the blanket wasn’t quite big enough. I had almost enough for a full border, even if they weren’t quite all the same size. Just needed another four squares, which took me somewhat longer than they should have done to complete.
And then it took me another couple of weeks to find the energy to stitch it all together and finally finish this granny square blanket. It helpfully used up several more yarns from my stash, as well as the many little granny squares.

Hooray for a great stash bust! Those squares were just waiting for their time.
