2025.29: The Very Hungry Caterpillars

A few months ago we were given some plants for our garden: cabbage, broccoli and a brussel sprout. There was also a tomato plant, and some more chives, but the brassicas are the important ones for this story.

Image shows small caterpillars on a green leaf.

These have been planted with our fig tree, since the blueberry bushes competed too hard with the fig. And there was a problem with the soil which killed off our original fig and one of the blueberries. These have since been replaced, and the blueberries moved to separate pots. They’re all much happier.

The new fig tree seems particularly happy, with a whole FIVE figs currently growing. The blueberries, too, have provided us with a steady supply of berries.

But back to the veg.

After being left in their little pots for somewhat longer than planned, these were put with the fig, along with a sweet pea Tiny had chosen on a trip to a garden centre for something else. Naturally.

On Saturday, there were lots of little caterpillars. Cabbage White caterpillars, of course. We’ve seen a couple of the butterflies fluttering around since we planted these.

Today, there were more caterpillars than leaves left. They aren’t very little caterpillars anymore, either. Mostly, they’re quite big, fat caterpillars. We look forward to finding the chrysalides and waiting for the Beautiful Butterflies with Tiny.
